Marc noticed these weird cat-sculptures the other day as he was coming out of a multi-story carpark located in the Byward Market. He took a picture with his phone to show me, and of course I was intrigued and wanted to see for myself so we went back last weekend (going back with the camera to take more photos to post on the blog was also a great excuse for a walk in the market and a stop on a patio for a pint!).

After Marc showed me the sculptures he had noticed while driving we kept discovering more and more cats! Sadly we ignore who created them and put them there as we could not find any mention of it being some sort of art project. They look like they are made of papier maché or some similar material but we didn’t really want to touch them to find out because, well… it’s not the cleanest carpark ever. So if you have any info about the carpark cats please let us know in the comment section below as we’d like to know more!

I walked a different way to work this morning and by doing so stumbled upon an exhibition taking place at the underpass of Portage Bridge here in Ottawa. 12 large scale photographic artworks with an environmental theme are painted on the walls as part of the summer edition of the Eco Art project (earlier this year these same pictures taken by young photographers from all across Canada were displayed at Dows Gallery, on the Rideau Canal Skateway so you might have seen them there if you’re a Canal skater). It’s always nice to come across an art exhibition (regardless of if you like the art shown or not) when you don’t expect it – especially when it’s at a portion of a path known for being quite dodgy since it’s dark, sometime home to creepy-looking people and has bikes literally coming flying from every direction paying, as usual, no attention to us pedestrians! I actually had to risk my life dodging a dozen cyclists in order to take these pictures so I hope you’ll excuse the weird angles on some of them….Enjoy the exhibition

We thought it was a great and unique example of recycling and that, actually, it’d be a good idea for Canada Post follow this example and to start turning more of their mailboxes into artwork like this one; it’d add a little je-ne-sais-quoi to boring neighborhoods!

Ottawa is often described as a plain and boring city – mostly by us, we must admit – but we went on a little walk the other day and saw some street art worth sharing on The Blog (which we neglected in the last few weeks due to us being busy with work, the weather being nice enough to take Desmond for walks and the BBQ and TFC season having recently started.)

So it starts with a man walking out from a painted door on the side of an office for rent near the Rideau Centre. What a great way to advertise a space for rent! Much better than your typical Remax sign featuring the face of a posing “straight from the 80′s failed model” estate agent…A certain Tammy comes to mind.

Then we move on to a mural done by Shepard Fairey (yes, the Obey guy featured on that post)’s crew as part of a project with Norml Clothing, an urban boutique located nearby.

We complete the tour with a very strange “keyboard from space” wall painting… If someone would be kind enough to explain the meaning of that thing it’d be greatly appreciated! Nevertheless, it’s cool to have this kind of artwork on random buildings throughout the city. It contributes to diversifying the urban landscaping a little bit and add personality to an otherwise plain city.

On 24/08/2009 we published a post about a cool picture of a graffiti taken 2 years ago in Kensington Market. We mentionned in that post that we would like to go back and see what it now looks like. Well, we did go during the weekend and were really disappointed: the wall where the naked-with-a-wig woman used to be was a plain, dull, red-brownish painted brick wall… What a shame… However, just down the street from it we saw that painting (above), pretty cool isn’t? Kensington Market is such an artistic, eclectic and vibrant neighborhood; we think that all buildings should be treated as art canvas for artists to create stuff like the piece featured here.

_________________________

We took that picture in 2007 during our first trip to Toronto together. We like it because it’s different from other graffiti , mostly because of the woman’s hair. The wig gives the whole thing another dimension and, compared to other street art that sometime look like they’ve just been ‘painted there’ the woman looks like she really belong to that wall.

The picture was taken in Kensington Market and we’re planning on going back there sometime soon to see what’s now on that same wall. We hope we won’t be disappointed!

A word about Kensington Market, for people who aren’t familiar with Toronto: that’s one of Toronto’s very arty and unique neighborhood, where you can find almost anything in vintage store. It’s just off Chinatown (with all its fruit & veg & everything else markets), and there are also a few stores specialized in retro furniture so if you’re tired of IKEA and instead dream of decorating your apartment in a genuine 1950′s style this is the place to go!

Moonbean Café - Mocha

One last thing: there’s this organic/fair-trade coffee shop called Moonbean Café where when you order a mocha it comes like the one on this picture. Just that makes it worthwhile to go and spend a Saturday morning there.
