A few weeks ago we designed this advert for Vero Moda, a women fashion label part of the Bestseller family of clothing brands. It was a project very different from the ones that we normally work on: extremely tight deadline, concept needing to be fully photography-based, dealings with various departments, high-resolution printing requirements involved, etc. We’re used to a full creative process that includes brainstorming, drawings of thumbnails and drafts, back and forth with the client to get their feedback and so on… With this ad project, we had to get our arses Photoshops in gear and go straight to the drawing board in order to produce something on time!

Overall it turned out to be a great experience, especially when FASHION Magazine came out in store last Monday: we rushed to the store to get a copy so that we could see “our” ad printed on shiny paper! We were quite proud to see a design created byYellow Car Designprinted next to an advert for a prestigious Christian Dior fragrance

As owners of two cats that love Royal Canin food to the extent that it has to be kept under tighter security than the gold bullion at Fort Knox this advert really struck a chord with us!

Obviously we’d like to see a version featuring our cats (they’re quite photogenic: Steve only needs to hear the camera turned on to be posing for the camera like Fabio. He has similar hair to him as well… Maybe the mystery of who the father is has been solved! ) but then it would need a speaker added so that passers by would not only get the drool but also hear what we hear everytime one of their bellies rumble (which believe me gets old fast)… So it’s probably better they just stick to dogs.

Here’s what the advertising agency had to say regarding the concept;

‘We booked two billboards (18/1) placed face to face, each on one side of a small street. One of the billboards shows the close portrait of a dog (of the breed Gread Dane) on a plain white background. The dog looks directly to the billboard in front of him, he has a longing expression on his face, is magnetised of what he sees. The sight of the billboard he is faced with obviously makes his mouth water: his drool drops from his tongue and ponds beneath the billboard. (We created this puddle with jam sugar that dropped from a simple installation of a canister and a tube.) On the other side of the street the viewer sees, what fascinates the drooling dog: The huge picture of “Royal Canin Great Dane” dog food!’

We realized yesterday that October is the Small Business Month (at least here in Toronto!). See, we consider ourselves as Graphic Designers and tend to forget that we also have to be business people since we are, after all, the owners of our studio and its success depends entirely on us. Anyways, to celebrate Small Businesses, Rogers is giving small company owners the chance to win $20,000 in free advertising and the opportunity to upload a banner onto their website for free. So we did it yesterday, not sure of if it would work or not, and it did… We saw it live a few times this morning. Looks good doesn’t it? Hopefully, we’ll win the money as we could really do with some more advertising Wish us luck!

We came across this billboard during the weekend and were somewhat disappointed. It is as if the designers who did it had a really good idea of ‘hot meeting cold’, but sort of ran out of time in the process so got a classroom of high school art students to do the job in papier-mâché. It’s a shame, cause really it’s a good idea and could have worked very well; but unfortunately is was badly implemented so it looks ugly. However, even if it’s hard to tell if the ‘ugliness’ was done on purpose or not we thought that it was worth taking a picture and sharing it with the world!

____________

Solstice – Panneau Publicitaire
